Apartment Maintenance Guide

How to take care of your apartment

As a tenant, you are responsible for regularly maintaining (and attending to) the items listed below. Proper cleaning and maintenance can prevent water damage, improve indoor air quality, and help avoid potential indoor air issues.

  • Weekly cleaning: Vacuum and wash the floors, wipe away dust, and air out the apartment thoroughly every week.
  • Seals: Notify the landlord or property maintenance if the seals on windows or doors need to be replaced.
  • Lightbulbs and batteries: Replacing lightbulbs and batteries is the responsibility of the tenant.

See below for more detailed instructions.

Bathroom

  • Floor drain: Clean the floor drain once a week by removing the drain cover and clearing out hair and other debris from both the drain and the cover. You can use an old dishwashing brush for this.
  • U-bend / Trap: Clean the bathroom sink’s U-bend (trap) roughly once a month. You can use a household drain cleaner, or detach the bottom part of the trap from the sink and wash the pipe manually.
  • Floors and seams: Clean and wash the bathroom and sauna floors thoroughly. Check the joints and seams of the plastic flooring or tiles. The seams and joints must be intact, and the floor must be undamaged.
  • Ventilation: Clean the ventilation supply air valve. Remove the center part and the frame of the valve simultaneously from their screws.
  • Sauna drying: Leave the sauna stove on for about 30 minutes after bathing so that the sauna facilities have time to dry properly. Open the ceiling valve of the steam sauna after use.
  • Drying the floor: Wipe away excess water from the shower and bathroom floor after use, for example, with a floor squeegee.
  • Silicone joints: The silicone joints in the wall corners must be intact. If the joints are peeling or detached and cannot be cleaned, report the matter to property maintenance so they can repair the defects.

Kitchen

  • Range hood grease filter: The grease filter located underneath the range hood must be kept clean to ensure adequate exhaust air filtration. Remove the grease filter and wash it with warm water and dish soap, or in a dishwasher, at least 1–2 times a month.
    • To remove the grease filter:
      • Twist open the quick-release fasteners on the fan’s bottom plate.
      • Fold the plate downwards.
      • Detach the grease filter from its holder.
      • Wash the grease filter, allow it to dry, and then reinstall it.
  • Stove and oven: Clean the hotplates/stove and the oven at regular intervals. Remember to also clean underneath and behind the stove.
  • Refrigerator and freezer: Keep the refrigerator fresh. Defrost the freezer as needed. Remember to also clean above and underneath the refrigerator.
  • Sink cabinet: Check the drain connections under the kitchen sink. The connections, floor, or shelves under the sink must not be damp. Clean the trash bins.
  • Water pipes: Check the condition of the water pipes and notify property maintenance if any parts are leaking around a seal or gasket.
  • Silicone strips: Check that the silicone strips are in place and that water cannot penetrate through the joints.

Heating system

Check the operation of the radiator thermostats. If a radiator is cold, turn the thermostat back and forth to help it start working again. If the radiator still does not warm up, please contact property maintenance.

Ventilation

  • Airing out: Air out your apartment once a week, for example during cleaning, to keep the indoor air fresh. Check that the grilles on the ventilation hatches are intact and that the mesh screens are not covered in dust or debris. Clean the grilles by vacuuming.
  • Fresh air valves: In the Lärkan 1 building (Vöyrinkatu 4), the fresh air valves are located above the windows. The valves must remain open for the ventilation to function correctly.
  • Drying laundry: Do not dry laundry inside the apartment. Instead, use the tumble dryer in the laundry room or use your balcony.

If you have pets, ensure that you change the cat litter or clean small rodent cages frequently enough. Pets must not be walked or let loose in the stairwells or the yard.
